- The cable system provides for a return channel, but it is at a much
- lower effective bps. Actually, the return channel is about 1000000 bps,
- but it is packet-switched among all active users, so it rarely gets its
- maximum speed. It is also possible to use a slower modem line for the
- sending part of the operations.
-
- The main use for it is web-type activities, and most of that is
- sending from the source. You simply send tiny requests to them.
- Continuous data transmission streams are also possible; like the
- teletext systems now, but with higher bandwidth.
-
- The possibilities here are endless, but *standards* will play a big
- role. Whichever company gets a lock on the standards will own the
- industry -- just as most home VCRs are VHS, most home settop boxes will
- use a single OS. And I can't see anyone but Microsoft going for
- WindowsTV :)
